LIMINAL SPACE

A number of large scale architectural installations are exhibited during ‘Liminal Space’ at Noble Play, Bangkok, Thailand. This solo exhibition features a series of works by Sanitas Pradittasnee, the Thai artist best known for her thought-provoking, site-specific pieces that blend art, architecture, and installation. She is the founder of Sanitas Studio, a contemporary art practice that infuses their projects with profound landscape architecture know-how, resulting in a distinct style for which the studio is known and loved. These aesthetically compelling pieces contain within them hidden meanings and messages about spirituality, society, and their co-existence.

Sanitas is drawn to the studies of history and faith. Such themes are interwoven into her architectural installations, often reflecting upon the relationship between the natural and the manmade. Seamlessly marrying contemporary architectural designs with old world beliefs, her pieces explore how enduring religious philosophies influence their ever-evolving educational, social, and cultural surroundings and vice versa. In doing so, her works reveal that a city’s architecture, environment, and culture are intrinsically and infinitely interconnected. Amidst constant changes in our surrounding, her artworks seeks to open a space where people can slowdown, pause and spend time with themselves.

The contrast between architectural mirror installation and the earth; a humble material quite opposite to the shiny mirror facade are juxtaposed to provoke people’s consciousness. In her creations, the self of ‘architecture’ is reduced while the changing ‘nature’ is highlighted from reflection of surrounding nature. The earth serves as a reminder of the origins of all things, the root of existence, inviting us to attune to our physical senses and ultimately return to the feeling of emptiness.

From the first piece, ‘Khao Mo’ 2013 inspiration was drawn from the miniature mountain, a traditional Thai art representing the beliefs of Mount Kailash. From outside, it is towering of mirror boxes resembling silhouette of the mountain, inviting people to explore the sanctuary inside, which is the soil.

At outdoor space, two large-scale works are presented. "House of Silence" resembles a meditation pavilion wanting to create a tranquil space for city dwellers.

"Liminal Space," viewed externally, reflects the urban environment. In stark contrast, the inside is empty except for...earth..

Liminal Space is open for viewing and interaction every day from 10:00-17:00, starting 3 November 2023 - 20 February 2024 at noble PLAY | Inspiration Playground G Floor, Noble Ploenchit (BTS Ploenchit)
