Garden of Silence
“Garden of Silence”, consists of three distinct pieces: EXISTENCE, EMPTINESS and SILENCE. The first one,
‘EXISTENCE’ is crafted from precisely cut and folded steelplates forming sharp geometric angles. It emerges from the ground as a solid form, encapsulating an empty interiorspace. The industrial steel sheets give a cold and stark impression. Over time, the surface of the artwork undergoes a transformation, rusting and changing in reaction to the air.
‘EMPTINESS’, the second piece, resembles a mound ofearth, layered like a stupa or ancient ruin, blanketed with vegetation. This structure reflects the constant changes of nature, imparting a sense of life and natural rhythm. Its unique feature allows viewers to step inside, where they encounter reflections of themselves from mirrors in all directions. The artwork opens up at the top, offering a view of the sky above, blending with nature. The mirrors, strategically positioned, follow the proportional guidelines found in Buddhist religious architecture.
The final piece, ‘SILENCE’ is a tower that invites visitors to climb and enjoy a panoramic view of the rubber plantation from an elevated perspective. Like ‘EMPTINESS’, its surface is adorned with the same type of mirrors used in temples, reflecting the entire landscape of the rubber plantation. This aspect seamlessly integrates the artwork with the surrounding environment, enabling it to blend and transform with the changing light and time.
All three pieces are installed within a rubber plantation comprising 108 rubber trees. The artist has strategically hung brass wind chimes between the trees, which produce melodious sounds with the passing wind. This setup aims to emulate the universe in terms of space and time, incorporating dimensions of width, length, depth, and time. It serves as a contemplative space for individuals to introspect on the transformations occurring around them, within themselves, and to ponder the concepts of existence, emptiness, and the silence of everything. This silence is not about the absence of sound but symbolizes the act of letting go and not holding onto anything.
This artwork is a permanent installation at Cherntawan International Meditation Center, Ban Mai San Pa Hiang, Huai Sak sub-district, Mueang Chiang Rai District, Chiang Rai province.
